Building Believers and Communities: Eastern Star Church Expands Affordable Housing Vision
Eastern Star Church is investing in the future of Indianapolis’s Far Eastside with new affordable housing and the ROCK Impact Campus, expanding opportunities for families and the community.
Eastern Star Church has taken another decisive step in transforming Indianapolis’s urban landscape. Marking a major milestone, church and city leaders recently gathered in the Martindale Brightwood area for a groundbreaking ceremony, announcing plans to construct new affordable housing options.
The announcement comes hand-in-hand with the church’s strategic purchase of the former Martin University campus, now rebranded as the ROCK Impact Campus. Together, these developments reflect Eastern Star Church’s comprehensive, four-prong ROCK Initiative—a holistic mission centered on housing, education, financial literacy, and community connection.
To begin the ceremony Pastor Jeffrey Johnson II prayed and emphasized the importance of the African American church and community connection along with the legacy of eastern Star Church.
For Eastern Star Church, addressing systemic disparities through tangible neighborhood development is a direct expression of faith. Executive Administrator, Anthony Murdock Sr., who plays a key frontline role in leading these community-facing efforts, underscored that this expansion requires deep operational leadership to ensure the ministry’s vision comes to fruition across its properties. Leadership emphasized that projects of this magnitude rely on a vast network of dedicated team members, partners, donors, and congregation support working together to safeguard the community’s future.
“When a community or organization opens its heart to serve those around them, God provides the blessings and resources necessary to bring that big vision to life.”
— Jeffrey Johnson Sr., Legacy Pastor, Eastern Star Church
Senior leadership reinforced that tackling the ongoing affordable housing shortage is critical to stabilizing local families and building generational strength. As Eastern Star Legacy Pastor Jeffrey Johnson Sr. noted during the ceremony, when a community or organization opens its heart to serve those around them, God provides the blessings and resources necessary to bring that big vision to life.
The housing expansion is designed to ensure families gain access to quality homes that might otherwise remain out of reach. Alongside the physical construction, the newly acquired ROCK Impact Center and other properties will serve as a multi-use engine for local growth, housing aligned community partners—such as media and youth engagement firms—that fulfill the four core pillars of the initiative.
City officials and community leaders on site commended Eastern Star Church for stepping up as vital neighborhood shepherds. By pairing real estate development with compassionate social advocacy, the church continues to set a benchmark for community-led revitalization across the Far Eastside and greater Indianapolis.
