Medicare: The Mistakes, the Myths and the Math
Navigating Medicare can feel overwhelming, especially with so many myths and misunderstood details standing between seniors and confident healthcare decisions. Licensed Medicare broker Jean Poole breaks down the basics from Original Medicare to Advantage and Supplement plans while busting common myths that could be costing retirees thousands. It’s the first in a monthly series aimed at helping seniors cut through the confusion and make informed choices about their coverage.
“I can’t believe that we are expected to remember all these details at our age, is what most seniors say!” If this is you, or you care for an aging senior, this information is for you.
Medicare insurance is one of the most important decisions as you reach retirement—yet it’s one of the most misunderstood. Far too often, I meet people who are paying too much, missing benefits, or making bad decisions.
As a licensed Medicare broker, former State Farm agency owner, registered financial professional, and Social Security benefits “set-up” advisor, my goal is simple: help people clearly understand these decision so they can make confident, informed choices.
“Medicare is not a one-size-fits-all program. It’s a system that rewards informed decisions.”

Some Mistakes:
A few Myths:
Myth #1: Medicare is free.
Fact: While many people have no premium for Medicare Part A, Medicare is not free. Part B has a monthly premium, and there are deductibles, copays, and coinsurance that can add up if not planned for.
Myth #2: Medicare covers everything.
Fact: Original Medicare does not cover routine dental, vision, hearing, long-term care, or most prescriptions. That’s why supplemental coverage or Medicare Advantage plans are so important to evaluate.
Myth #3: All Medicare plans are the same.
Fact: Plans differ by county, provider networks, prescription coverage, and out-of-pocket costs. What works well on the north side may not be the best fit for someone on the east side of Indianapolis.
The Math:
The real Medicare cost isn’t just the monthly premium; it’s the total annual expense: premiums, deductibles, prescriptions, and potential hospital or specialist visits. Choosing the wrong plan can cost thousands over time.
Medicare is not a one-size-fits-all program. It’s a system that rewards informed decisions. My role is to help you avoid costly mistakes, cut through the myths, and understand the math—so your healthcare supports the retirement you worked hard to build.
Stay tuned! Each month, we’ll break down enrollment periods, penalties, Social Security timing, and the impact on your overall financial plan.
