Indianapolis East Rotary Celebrates a Year of Service and Leadership
The Indianapolis East Rotary Club celebrated another year of service by recognizing the people and projects making a difference across the Eastside. From supporting students to honoring community leaders, the organization continues its mission of creating lasting impact through action.

The Indianapolis East Rotary Club closed out another successful year by honoring outstanding service and reflecting on the impact its members have made throughout the Eastside community. During the organization’s annual meeting and awards presentation, outgoing Club President Dr. Tim Hanson praised members for their dedication to Rotary’s enduring motto, “Service Above Self.”
“Throughout this year, I have witnessed your generosity, your commitment, and your willingness to step forward whenever our community needed support,” Hanson told members. “Whether supporting local students, investing in community projects, mentoring future leaders, or simply showing up when help was needed, each of you has contributed to making our community stronger.”
Hanson noted that while Rotary’s accomplishments can be measured by dollars raised and volunteer hours served, the organization’s greatest impact goes much deeper.
“Our true impact is found in the lives we touch, the opportunities we create, and the hope we provide for others,” he said.

Among the club’s favorite projects of the year was the Middle School Shoes and Socks Service Project, which provided essential items for students in need. Hanson called the effort “four of my favorite days as both a Rotarian and Superintendent,” praising members for coming together to address a tangible need in the lives of young people.
The club also recognized several individuals and organizations for their commitment to service. The Community Service Award was presented to Rijenna Murray and the Moorhead Community Resource Center. Hanson highlighted Murray’s story of helping a child with a hole in the bottom of their shoe, saying the center’s work provides “support, hope, and resources to countless students, families, and community members across Warren Township.”
Longtime community volunteer Kathryn Basham received the prestigious Service Above Self Award. Hanson praised Basham’s “whatever it takes” attitude and noted that she never seeks recognition, but instead “simply shows up, does the work, and makes a difference.”
The club’s Rotarian of the Year honor went to Phil Talbert, whose leadership of the Scholarship Committee helped produce one of the strongest scholarship cycles in recent memory.
As his presidential year concluded, Hanson expressed gratitude for the club’s shared mission.
“The Indianapolis Eastside is stronger because of your leadership, your generosity, and your belief that each of us has a responsibility to leave our community better than we found it,” Hanson said. “It has been my honor and privilege to serve as your President.”
For Indianapolis East Rotary, another year of service has become another chapter in a legacy built on friendship, leadership, and making a difference.
